Former Chapin standout makes Women’s CWS

The upcoming NCAA Women’s College World Series will feature some familiar Lake Murray faces among the qualifying teams.

There’s infielder Karley Shelton of Lexington and catcher Lexi Winters who helped the University of South Carolina earn a national 8th seed. The Gamecocks (40-15) will open at home at 5:30 p.m. Friday versus Elon.

The Durham Regional in North Carolina will include Georgia (31-20) facing Coastal Carolina Friday. Making their second trip back to the Carolinas this season for the Lady Bulldogs are outfielder Sarah Gordon of Lexington and infielder Precious Bross of Irmo.

Rounding out the list is former Chapin All-State infielder Andee Dircks. She’s playing her freshman season for the University of Michigan.

In 16 games, she has batted .333 with five hits and three RBI.

The Wolverines (38-19) this past weekend captured their second straight Big 10 title to earn a tournament berth. As an 8th seed, Michigan defeated fourth-ranked Oregon in the quarterfinals and ninth-ranked UCLA in the championship game.

The Wolverines will open play in Austin, Texas Friday against Central Florida at 2 p.m. on ESPN2.
