CIS is proud to feature 6th-grade student Sooa Son for her remarkable achievement of being
selected to the Midlands Region Orchestra. This prestigious selection is a significant
accomplishment, as many students aspire to be chosen, but few are selected.
The Midlands Region Orchestra is a two-day event that brings together the strongest string
players from Richland, Lexington, and Aiken counties. Participants are given the chance to
audition for the South Carolina All-State Orchestra, a highly competitive group made up of the
most talented musicians in the state. The orchestra event is divided into three ensembles: 6-8
Orchestra, 9-10 Orchestra, and 11-12 Orchestra. Each year, approximately 200 students
audition, but only a select few are chosen, with a limited number of spots available for each
instrument section.
For the 6-8 Orchestra, which Sooa is part of, only 18 first violins, 18 second violins, 14 violas, 12
cellos, and 10 basses are selected. This achievement not only showcases Sooa’s exceptional
talent but also provides her with the opportunity to perform with some of the finest young
musicians in the Midlands region of South Carolina. Under the direction of a renowned
conductor, Sooa will experience the thrill of playing advanced repertoire that is rarely performed
at the school level.
Being part of the Midlands Region Orchestra is an outstanding accomplishment, one that will
provide Sooa with valuable musical experiences and connections with other talented musicians.
This opportunity also enhances her profile for future college applications, as many institutions
recognize such prestigious achievements.
CIS congratulates Sooa on this incredible accomplishment and is proud to feature her as one of
our Students of Achievement.
