Registration Closing Soon for Lake Murray Cleanup Event

Keep the Midlands Beautiful (KMB) is gearing up for the sixth annual Lake Murray Cleanup on September 14, but volunteers must register by this Friday, September 6, to participate. The event runs from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., and volunteers will clean up islands, shorelines, boat ramps, roads, and natural areas around Lake Murray, as well as other waterways across Lexington and Richland counties.

Participants can check in at three Lake Murray locations: Southshore Marina in Leesville, Catfish Johnny’s/Rusty Anchor in Chapin, and Dreher Island State Park in Prosperity. Volunteers will receive cleanup supplies, event t-shirts, safety briefings, and a chance to win prizes from local businesses, thanks to event sponsors Dominion Energy, PalmettoPride, and Lexington County Solid Waste Management, among others.

Boaters are welcome to bring their own boats, while non-boaters can rely on free shuttles provided by local charter and rental companies. Certified divers are also encouraged to participate, partnering with the Wateree Dive Center.

The cleanup is part of the statewide Beach Sweep River Sweep program, which aims to keep South Carolina’s waterways clean. For more information and to register, visit Keep the Midlands Beautiful.
