Local Author Marjorie Kneece Publishes New Book on Magnolia Plantation

Chapin, SC – Marjorie Kneece, a well-known local resident and author, has just released her latest book, “MAGNOLIA – Eden on the Ashley.” This new publication takes readers on an in-depth exploration of Charleston’s historic Magnolia Plantation and Gardens, as well as the Audubon Swamp Garden. Kneece, who has deep ties to Chapin and the Lake Murray area, brings her unique perspective and passion for South Carolina’s history to life in this beautifully illustrated book.

“Magnolia Plantation and Gardens is one of the most stunning places in our state,” said Kneece. “The history and vibrant flowers make it a place worth visiting in every season.”

A Tribute to History

The book delves into the rich history of the Lowcountry treasure along the Ashley River. Dedicated to South Carolina, Reverend John G. Drayton—the original owner of the “Carolina Gold” rice plantation—and Adam Bennett, the first enslaved garden superintendent, the book honors those who played crucial roles in the plantation’s history. Drayton started the gardens, while Bennett and his family devoted their lives to the plantation, both before and after the Civil War. These personal stories add depth and context to the narrative.

Exploring the Gardens

Kneece’s book highlights the seasonal beauty of Magnolia Plantation’s gardens. Readers will find themselves surrounded by camellias, azaleas, tulips, hydrangeas, and many other blooms, set against a backdrop of cypress trees and Spanish moss-draped oaks. The property also features charming footbridges and tranquil ponds, providing an intimate connection with nature. Additionally, there’s a petting zoo on the grounds, home to peacocks, deer, birds of prey, pigs, and ducks.

Audubon Swamp Garden

A significant portion of the book is dedicated to the Audubon Swamp Garden, located on the plantation grounds. This swamp is a haven for wildlife, including alligators, snakes, turtles, and a variety of bird species such as hawks, owls, herons, and egrets. The book provides an inside look at the swamp’s ecosystem, particularly during the spring nesting season, which is a highlight for many visitors.
