District Five Music Students Shine with Top Honors

School District Five band, choir and orchestra students recently participated in Concert Performance Assessments during the month of March. Students brought home numerous top honors.

The South Carolina Concert Performance Assessment is designed for middle and high school orchestral ensembles – both string and full. The assessments allow students and directors an opportunity to perform for state and nationally known adjudicators for comments and ratings on prepared repertoire. This event also has a sight-reading element for all high school ensembles as well as those middle school ensembles who might want to take advantage of the experience.

School District Five’s Orchestra Concert Performance Assessments are as follows: Chapin High School Master Class Orchestra brought home a Superior rating, Chapin Middle School’s 7th and 8th Grade Orchestras received Superior with Distinction, Chapin High School Combined Orchestra Classes performed on March 28th and brought home a Superior rating.The Dutch Fork Middle Honors Orchestra also got a Superior with Distinction award at CPA and a Superior award at Carowinds,

The concert performance assessments for band were held March 18-21 and March 26-28 at eight locations across the state. A panel of four judges (three concert stage performance and one sight-reading) rated the bands from 1-5 in various categories, looking for key indicators of a superior performance.

Chapin Middle School’s Symphonic Band received Superior with Distinction and Chapin Middle School Concert band received an Excellent rating. Dutch Fork High School Symphonic Band received an Excellent Rating in Class III and Dutch Fork High School’s Symphonic Winds earned a Superior with Distinction Rating in Class VI. Dutch Fork Middle School’s 8th Grade Band received a Superior with Distinction rating, Irmo High School’s Symphonic Winds received a Superior with Distinction Rating in Class IV. Irmo Middle School Honor Band received a Superior with Distinction.

Chapin High School’s Chamber Singers performed on March 25th and brought home a Superior rating. The Irmo High Concert Choir received a Superior Rating at our Concert Performance Assessment on Monday, March 25. Dutch Fork High School Chorus 10th – 12th graders scored Superior with Distinction at the Choral Performance Assessment.

The Elementary District Honor Choir, which represents students in 4th, 5th, and 6th grade from nine School District Five schools, received a Superior Rating at the Carowinds Music Festival on April 26. The choir is directed by Amanda Rushe and accompanied by Ashleigh Morse.

“This is such a great honor for these students and their teachers,” School District Five Coordinator of Athletics, Visual Arts and PE Steven Puckett said. “I know it is extremely rewarding to see the hard work and countless hours of practice be recognized through such a prestigious designation.”
