On their way back from a high school basketball game against Cane Bay High School in Summerville, several members of the Chapin High School basketball team had an unexpected encounter with Governor Henry McMaster at a Spinx gas station on Jedburg Road. The Governor, returning to Columbia from a political rally in Charleston, took the time to engage with the student-athletes.
The young athletes were pleasantly surprised and excited about the unique opportunity to meet Governor McMaster. The Governor, in turn, showed his graciousness by asking each student’s name and spending a considerable amount of time discussing the game, expressing sympathy for their loss, and showing genuine interest in their experiences.
The impromptu encounter provided the students with a unique opportunity to interact with the Governor and share a moment during his journey. Such chance meetings often create lasting memories for those involved, fostering a sense of connection between local communities and their political leaders.
