Born and raised in Lexington County, local pharmacist Steven Asbill has filed to run for South Carolina House District 85, which includes parts of Irmo, Lexington, and Chapin.
Asbill said he is running because many residents feel everyday concerns like traffic congestion, school crowding, rising costs, and shrinking access to local healthcare are not receiving enough attention from the State House.
“My goal is to improve the quality of life in District 85,” Asbill said. “People here want leadership focused on the issues they face every day; roads that keep up with growth, strong schools, and healthcare they can rely on. That’s where my focus will be.”
Asbill’s priorities include improving healthcare access and affordability, supporting livable wages and work stability, strengthening Lexington County infrastructure, protecting animal welfare, and providing more accessible leadership at the State House.
Asbill, 35, grew up in the Whitehall community before recently moving to Coldstream with his husband and their three dogs. As a pharmacist, he said he has seen firsthand how policy decisions affect families across the district.
“I’ve watched independent pharmacies and urgent cares close, schools stretch resources thinner each year, and roads around Irmo and Chapin fall behind our growth,” Asbill said. “Too often, the State House is focused on national political fights instead of solving the problems people here are dealing with at home. District 85 deserves leadership that puts local priorities first.”
He said his campaign will emphasize practical solutions and direct engagement with residents across the district.
“Representation should be visible and accountable,” Asbill said. “People deserve to know their concerns are being heard, and acted on.”
The Democratic primary election is scheduled for June 9.
