Piney Woods Elementary Celebrates Read Across America Week

March 4-8, 2024, marked a celebration of literacy at Piney Woods Elementary as students immersed themselves in the enchanting world of books during Read Across America Week. The school buzzed with excitement as children and teachers alike engaged in a plethora of activities inspired by beloved literary classics.

From the whimsical antics of “The Book With No Pictures” to the shimmering scales of “The Rainbow Fish,” and the timeless charm of “Reading Rainbow,” students reveled in the magic of storytelling throughout the week. Led by dedicated educators like third-grade teacher Carolyn Duncan, Read Across America Week served as a platform to nurture a deep-seated love for reading while fostering a strong sense of community among students, teachers, and parents.

The festivities kicked off with a special visit from author and illustrator Andrea Zuill, who captivated students with tales of her creative process and the mischievous antics of her endearing character, Regina the dinosaur. Zuill’s engaging presentation left students enthralled and eager to explore the world of literature further.

Throughout the week, classrooms welcomed guest readers from various walks of life, including grandparents, community leaders, and even the school district superintendent. The presence of these esteemed guests not only instilled a sense of excitement but also underscored the importance of literacy within the community.

Storyteller Tim Lowry added to the enchantment of the week with his spellbinding folk tales, captivating students with his vivid storytelling and diverse array of accents. His performances left a lasting impression on students, sparking a newfound appreciation for the art of oral storytelling.
