In a recent operation, Lexington County narcotics agents apprehended a West Columbia resident, David Matthews, on charges related to drug trafficking and weapon offenses. The 
arrest follows allegations of Matthews trafficking meth, cocaine, and fentanyl.
Charges Against David Matthews Include:
- Trafficking meth
- Trafficking cocaine
- Trafficking fentanyl
- Possession with intent to distribute marijuana
- Six counts of possession of a weapon during the commission of a violent crime
- Seven counts of possession of a firearm by a person convicted of PWID
According to Sheriff Jay Koon, Matthews was stopped on I-26 near Charleston Hwy, where agents discovered a handgun in his possession. Due to a prior conviction, Matthews is prohibited from owning firearms.
A subsequent search warrant at Matthews’ residence unveiled a significant quantity of illicit substances and cash. The findings included over 28 grams each of meth, crack cocaine, and fentanyl, along with more than 3,500 grams of marijuana. Additionally, agents discovered six firearms, and one of them was reported stolen from a neighboring jurisdiction. The total amount of U.S. currency found exceeded $25,000.
Matthews is currently in custody at the Lexington County Detention Center, with a bond denial from a magistrate judge last week.
