Two District Five Student Councils earn national award

For their records of leadership, service and activities that improve their schools and communities, the student councils of Irmo High School and Spring Hill High School have been recognized as 2026 National Gold Councils of Excellence by the National Association of Student Councils (NASC).

The NASC program is supported by its parent organization, the National Association of Secondary School Principals (NASSP).

Throughout the 2025–2026 school year, the Irmo and Spring Hill High School Student Councils have demonstrated a commitment to leadership and service by promoting school pride, strengthening community engagement, and creating impact both on campus and beyond. Through initiatives such as partnering with Special Olympics to support inclusive programming, planning and executing high-energy pep rallies that unite the student body, and intentionally welcoming and supporting new students, these councils have worked to build a positive, inclusive school culture. Their efforts reflect the core purpose of student leadership organizations—to foster connection, encourage involvement, and create opportunities for all students to feel valued and engaged.

“These student council have just pulled off something extraordinary,” said NASSP CEO Ronn Nozoe. “Their student-driven change has earned them national recognition as a National Gold Council of Excellence, proving that when young people are given the chance to lead, they turn their vision into real-world impact.”

Spring Hill High School Principal, Dr. Michael Lofton said “I am incredibly proud of the hard work and dedication of our SHHS student council as a whole, our student leaders, and our sponsors. The work that they do for the school family is a true testament of the Spring Hill WAY . . . Working with Others, Academically Focused, Youth-Inspired. Their energy and enthusiasm is appreciated and makes a positive impact each and every day.”

Principal of Irmo High School, Dr. Kaaren Hampton echoed this sentiment by stating, “We are so excited Irmo High School Student Council has achieved such a great recognition for their hard work, dedication, and commitment to our community. This group is so special and they work at all times for the good of Irmo.”

A student council must meet a variety of criteria to earn the National Gold Council of Excellence Award. In addition to basic requirements such as a written constitution, regular meetings and a democratic election process, the councils must have demonstrated successful sponsorship and participation in activities such as leadership development and service to the school and community.
