CHAPIN, SC – The Town of Chapin is deeply saddened to announce the passing of Mayor Albert “Al” R. Koon, Jr., who died on Friday, October 17, 2025, at Lexington Medical Center. A lifelong resident of Chapin, Mayor Koon was born on July 23, 1951, to the late Albert Ray Sr. and Dorothy Stuart Koon. He was a pillar of the community, known not only for his decades of dedicated public service but also for his unwavering commitment to his family, faith, and the future of Chapin.
Mayor Koon shared 52 years of marriage with his beloved wife, Susan Keating Koon, and together they built a life centered on service, compassion, and community leadership. Throughout his tenure, Mayor Koon was widely respected as a man of integrity and vision, leading the town with grace, humility, and a steadfast dedication to its citizens.
In honor of his life and service, the Town of Chapin will observe the following arrangements:
● Mayor Koon will lie in state at Chapin Town Hall on Monday, October 20, from 1:00 PM to 4:00 PM, for those wishing to pay their respects.
● The Koon family will receive friends that evening from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM.
● Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, October 21, at 11:00 AM at Mt. Horeb Lutheran Church, officiated by the Rev. Ron Philabaum. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.
At this time, the Town of Chapin will not be providing further comment to the media.
