Still Swinging at 85: Tips for Staying Golf-Ready in Winter

By Robin All

It’s 2025, and I’ve hit a milestone: 85 years young and still going strong! While I’m not sure what level that puts me at in the world of senior golfers—maybe just “old”—I’m proud to still enjoy the game I love.

As the cold weather sets in and keeps us off the course, there are plenty of ways to stay sharp and golf-ready from the comfort of home. Here are a few tricks I’ve picked up to keep the swing alive through the winter months:

Putt Like a Pro (on Carpet!)

I keep a putter handy for some at-home carpet practice. Without the pressure of the course, my putting game is fantastic—at least at home! Even a few minutes a day can keep your touch and alignment sharp for when it’s time to hit the greens again.

Stretch and Strengthen

  • Weighted Clubs: A weighted exercise club can do wonders for your stretching routine and help build hand and forearm strength. Just remember: be careful of lamps, low ceilings, and chandeliers!
  • Light Dumbbells and Stretch Bands: I also use light barbells and stretch bands for simple exercises to keep my body limber and my core strong.

Consistency is Key

The goal this winter is simple: by spring, let’s aim to be stronger—or at the very least, not any weaker!

Stay active, stay warm, and have a Happy New Year! Here’s to another year of enjoying the game and everything life has to offer.

Keep swinging
