Literacy SC Expands Services to Support Adult Education

Adults in Richland, Lexington, and Aiken Counties are getting more opportunities to improve their reading, writing, and math skills thanks to Literacy SC, formerly known as Turning Pages SC. For over 57 years, the nonprofit has helped individuals overcome literacy barriers, and now it’s expanding its mission to include new programs tailored to modern needs.

“Many adults have spent years hiding their struggles with reading,” said Lisa Cole, CEO of Literacy SC. “We’re here to offer dignity, independence, and the tools they need to fully participate in their lives. With our rebrand, we’re growing beyond reading to include practical skills that support upward mobility.”

What Literacy SC Offers

The organization’s flagship Turning Pages Adult Reading Program provides free, one-on-one tutoring for adults, thanks to volunteers trained in specialized adult education techniques. In addition, Literacy SC is rolling out several new programs, including:

  • Path to Math: Workshops on budgeting, shopping, and career-focused math skills.
  • Workforce ESOL: English language instruction for workplace communication and job hunting.
  • Modern Study Skills: Techniques for teens and adults to succeed in today’s digital education environment.
  • Fundamentals of Accelerated Reading: Group reading workshops for unhoused adults in Columbia.

Accessible and Flexible Learning

With partnerships at 24 public libraries and a central office in Columbia, Literacy SC eliminates common learning barriers. There are no complicated forms, no technology requirements, and no rigid schedules. All services remain free for those enrolled in the Turning Pages program, while some new programs will have small fees to help fund the nonprofit’s efforts.
