The Family, Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) chapter at Irmo High School traveled to Denver, Colorado, from July 2, 2023, through July 7, 2023, to compete at the National Leadership Conference. Irmo High School student Chai’Ane Woolley represented School District Five at the conference.
Woolley competed in the National Programs in Action competition. This competition included her completing research, creating a presentation for students at her school, and then teaching students at Irmo High School about her topic. She earned bronze at the national conference and plans to compete with FCCLA again next school year.
“This was one of the best experiences of my life and I would love to go back next year,” Woolley said. “I learned so much about FCCLA and what I am capable of doing if I work hard. I will never forget this experience and plan to work hard to make it to the next national conference.”
Every year, FCCLA hosts conferences that bring together FCCLA members, advisers, and supporters from across the nation to learn, compete, and network. FCCLA’s conferences offer enriching experiences that provide attendees with the opportunity to hear from motivational speakers, attend rewarding workshops, connect with youth leaders, and develop skills for life.
Over 8,000 people were in attendance for this event, consisting of students, teachers, and industry partners. Training for students centered around leadership and career development skills, while advisor professional development was offered. FCCLA members worked on community service projects and attended social events. The activities helped to reinforce the value of teamwork, communication, and work ethic among members.
This was the first year FCCLA was under the leadership of Tari Watson at Irmo High School.
“I am extremely proud of all members and I think that this is only the beginning of many great things to come at Irmo High School,” Watson said. “The chapter hopes to increase membership and the number of students competing at the state and national levels as we move forward in the next year.”
