District Five reports gains in state school report cards

Graduation rates rise to highest level in more than two decades

School District Five of Lexington and Richland Counties is reporting gains in its latest state school report card results, with improvements in graduation rates, college and career readiness and school ratings.

The results, released by the South Carolina Department of Education, reflect progress across several key measures from the 2024-2025 to the 2025-2026 school years.

“We are thrilled and encouraged by the progress reflected in this year’s school report card results,” said Superintendent Dr. Akil E. Ross Sr. “These improvements represent the dedication of our teachers and staff, the determination of our students, and the partnership of our families. While we are proud of the progress we have made, we remain focused on building on this momentum and ensuring every student has the opportunity to demonstrate academic growth in our district.”

According to the district, the graduation rate increased from 89.7% to 91.8%, the highest rate since at least 2002.

College and career readiness also improved, rising from 81.2% to 81.5%. The district’s 2026 rate exceeds the state average of 77.3%.

Other improvements include:

  • No district schools received a Below Average rating in 2025-2026, compared with two schools the previous year.

  • Two additional elementary schools earned Excellent ratings.

  • One middle school improved its rating from Average to Good.

  • One high school improved its rating from Good to Excellent.

District Five also ranks first in the Midlands in the percentage of students who are College Ready and in the percentage who are College and Career Ready, according to the district.

The district continues to exceed state averages in English language arts and mathematics proficiency.

Annual school report cards provide families and communities with information about school and district performance, including academic achievement, student progress and other measures of educational quality. Comparing results from year to year helps identify strengths and areas where additional support and resources may be needed.
