District Five Athletes win CAWS Awards

The S.C. Coaches Association of Women’s Sports held its annual sports banquet on June 8 at Brookland Baptist Church in Cayce.

For the second straight year, the organization which recognizes the top female athletes in the state awarded its fall, winter, and spring award recipients at an end-of-year banquet.

Lexington/Richland School District Five produced three winners from two state championship teams.

Chapin’s Taylor Graves earned Cheer Athlete of the Year as the Lady Eagles won the Class 5A title in competitive cheer. It was the program’s state-record 17th title.

 Ava-Claire Collins earned Class 5A Lacrosse Athlete of the Year after the Lady Eagles won their first state title since 2019. Collins led Chapin with 96 goals and 26 assists this season.

Emily McMahan of Dutch Fork was named Class 5A Swimming Athlete of the Year. She won state titles in the 200 meters and the 100 freestyle.
