Columbia, SC – A Columbia man has been charged with the murder of his mother, an incident that took place last December. Terry Lee Self Jr., 37, faces charges of murder according to an arrest warrant issued by the Lexington County Sheriff’s Department.
The victim, identified as Regina Arroyo, was discovered on December 3 in the Edisto River by a canoeist. Lexington County Sheriff Jay Koon provided details about the case: “Detectives have determined that Self and his mother were seen leaving his residence together following an argument,” said Koon.
Lexington County Coroner Margaret Fisher confirmed the victim’s identity and the cause of death. “The evidence gathered indicates that Self used a ligature to strangle Ms. Arroyo,” Koon stated. “After committing the crime, Self disposed of her body in the river.”
Sheriff Koon emphasized the thorough nature of the investigation. “Our detectives have been diligently working on this case for seven months, focused on identifying and apprehending the individual responsible for Ms. Arroyo’s death,” Koon said. “We hope this arrest brings some measure of closure to her family and loved ones.”
Self is currently in custody and awaits further legal proceedings. The community and the victim’s family continue to mourn this tragic loss, and the authorities are committed to ensuring justice is served.
