Absolute Theatre Company presents Columbia’s premiere of “The Betty & Beau Wedding Show,” a 1933 madcap comedy wedding show featuring 1920-30’s music by “The Toasters,” Ed McCravy and Kevin Borgstedts, at St. Michael’s Lutheran Church. This historic venue, built in 1921 for the congregation celebrating its 200th anniversary, sets the perfect backdrop for the wild and fun action that unfolds throughout the “Wedding Guest’s” experience.
Betty Mutz, hailing from a peach farm in Frog Level, South Carolina, crossed paths with Beau Gittlemen while attending college in New York City. However, Beau’s family, owners of Gittlemen’s Fine Department Store, isn’t thrilled about their son marrying into a family with a peach farm and a junk store in the off-season!
As the audience becomes the Wedding Guest, they will be escorted to their reserved seats by Groomsmen. Following the wedding, guests are invited to a short reception with concessions and dancing to the lively tunes of “The Toasters.”
Reserved tickets for this unforgettable experience are $20 and can be purchased by calling 839-849-1036, any day from 9 am to 7 pm. St. Michael’s Lutheran Church is located at 400 River Road, Irmo, 29212, off HWY 6 near the Irmo side of the Dam.
Artistic director Kate Brighton originally penned “The Betty & Beau Wedding Show” for a 2005 presentation at the theater company’s headquarters on Ministry Drive. Although the show didn’t debut then, it premiered at two special productions in Hendersonville and Asheville, North Carolina. Kate is excited to finally bring this production home!
Rumor has it that in Kate’s neighborhood, there’s a warning posted not to pass by her house, as you might end up cast in a show. Some neighbors found out the hard way. Brooke Hill innocently walked her dogs past Kate’s home and was promptly asked to audition, eventually winning the starring role of the bride, Betty. This led to her father, mother, and two other neighborhood families being cast in the show. Absolute Theatre Company is renowned for its high-quality, professional-style productions that encourage full family participation. Don’t miss your invitation to the wedding. Call for tickets today!
