District Five Hosts Parent Leadership Training

Sessions help families prepare for Special Education Parent Advisory Council

School District Five of Lexington and Richland Counties hosted a two-part, in-person Parent Leadership Training September 19-20 to help families become more involved in supporting students receiving special education services.

The training was led by Family Connection of South Carolina as the district works to establish a Special Education Parent Advisory Council (SEPAC).

Parents of District Five students receiving special education services through an Individualized Education Program (IEP), along with district staff, participated in the sessions designed to build a strong foundation for a successful advisory council.

The training provided insight into parent leadership and advocacy, helping families better understand special education services while creating opportunities to connect and network with other parents.

Participants also learned about opportunities to serve as parent leaders within the district and play an active role in supporting students who receive special education services.
