The losing streak is now a distant memory for Chapin football.
It was the opening round of the 2024 Class 5A Division II playoffs at Cecil Woolbright Field when Chapin last celebrated a victory.
Nearly 20 months and 12 games later, the Eagles got to experience that winning feeling again at home. Chapin defeated Brookland-Cayce 45-22 for Corey Helms’ first win as head coach.
The Eagles scored the first 35 points of the game. An interruption for bad weather did not slow down the team’s momentum led by quarterback Tyler Black.
He completed 10-17 passes for 237 yards and two touchdowns. Ny’Shawn Palmore was his main target for both scores and he finished with five receptions for 146 yards.
On the ground, Charlie Howell rushed for 104 yards and two touchdowns. Harper Ellerbee and Kingston Bower each added a score.
Linebacker Parker Collins had 12 tackles and the defense had six pass deflections. On special teams, placekicker Beckham Diimmler had six touchbacks, went 6-6 on PATs and had a field goal.
Chapin (1-1) now heads on the road to face Aiken.
