Playing last Friday was a clear reminder that summer has arrived. As we get older, it’s important to take precautions we may have overlooked in our younger years.
Start with proper sun protection. Always wear a hat—preferably one with a full brim. Visors leave the top of your head exposed, and even standard baseball caps don’t fully protect areas like the ears. I know two men who recently had dermatology procedures on their scalps, and others who have needed treatment on their ears due to sun exposure.
I’ve personally dealt with multiple melanomas on my back, arms, and legs—largely the result of years without using sunscreen. Learn from those experiences: apply sunscreen regularly and don’t skip it, even on cloudy days.
From a golf standpoint, managing the heat is just as important. Carry extra gloves so you can switch them out when they become wet, and keep a dry towel handy. Sweaty hands can lead to slipping during your swing.
Hydration is critical. Bring plenty of water and drink it consistently throughout your round to support both your muscles and mental focus. Take advantage of shaded areas when possible and allow yourself time to rest.

We may not be getting any younger, but we can make smarter choices. Play early in the day when temperatures are lower, and take care of yourself so you can continue enjoying the game.
