District Five Retirees Reconnect at Luncheon’s Return

The Lexington-Richland School District Five Foundation brought back a familiar tradition last week, hosting a Retiree Luncheon on Thursday, March 26 at the Seven Oaks Recreation Center.

Nearly 250 former District Five employees turned out for the gathering, reconnecting with colleagues and celebrating the years they dedicated to local schools and the Irmo-Chapin community.

Dr. Mary Kennerly welcomed attendees, while Superintendent Dr. Akil Ross shared updates on what’s ahead for the district, including new initiatives and continued innovation in the classroom.

The luncheon marked a return after a five-year hiatus. The last event was held in 2020 before being paused due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Organizers say they hope to make the gathering an annual tradition once again.

District Five Food Service Catering prepared the meal, and organizers recognized Dr. Mary Kennerly, Dr. Barb Waldman, and Harriet Ward for their work coordinating the event. Live piano music was provided by Kirk Luther, adding to the afternoon’s celebratory atmosphere.
