Construction is underway at Congaree National Park to replace aging sections of the park’s iconic boardwalk. Contractors from McGary Construction began work on January 6, focusing on sections B, D, and F, which have surpassed their intended service life. The project is expected to take approximately 18 months, with completion anticipated in the summer of 2026.
To ensure visitor safety, sections of the boardwalk trail will close on a rolling basis as the project progresses. Initial work involves replacing section B with a new elevated boardwalk and closing section C to allow construction access. Work on sections D and F will follow in the coming months.
Visitor Safety and Access:
- Sims Trail will serve as the main route for crews, materials, and equipment.
- Hikers using Sims Trail should remain vigilant for construction activity and follow all marked trail closures.
- Detours will be in place to provide alternative access to park trails.
Park officials encourage visitors to check for updates on closures and detours on the Congaree National Park website and social media channels.
This boardwalk project aims to enhance the visitor experience and maintain the safety and accessibility of one of the park’s most popular features.
