Why March is the real new year

By Radley West

Every January gets all the attention, but in my experience, March is the real fresh start.

The days get longer. The weather softens. People stop hiding under hoodies and start thinking about boats, beaches, and whether last summer’s shorts still feel friendly. At Anytime Fitness, we see it every year. Just when winter routines get stale, spring energy kicks in, and people suddenly want to do something about how they feel and look.

That burst of motivation is beneficial. The problem is what people do with it.

Most folks try to fix everything at once. They add workouts, cut food, pile on cardio, and tell themselves they’re going “all in.” Just like in January, for about two weeks, it feels amazing. Then real life shows up. Soreness lingers. Schedules get busy. Motivation fades. By the time swimsuit season actually arrives, burnout has already beaten them to it.

Spring progress works best when you utilize the energy without overexerting yourself.

Instead of doing more, do better. Focus on training with intention. Build strength so your body changes shape, not just weight. Add movement that you can recover from instead of punishing sessions you dread. The goal in March isn’t exhaustion. It’s momentum.

Another mistake I see is guessing instead of planning. People walk in saying, “I just need to sweat.” Sweating is fine, but direction matters more. When someone has a coach, their workouts make sense. Time is used well. Progress shows up faster because the work matches the goal.

Spring is when people start thinking about boats and beaches. There’s nothing wrong with wanting to feel confident in fewer layers. What matters is how you chase it. Quick progress doesn’t come from doing random workouts. It comes from smart strength training, consistency, and not wasting the next 60 days.

March gives you just enough runway to change how summer feels.

If you’ve been waiting for the right time, this is it. Not with a dramatic overhaul, but with a simple plan you can actually follow. Around here, we see the biggest wins when people stop trying to do everything alone and start getting guided, even for a short season.

Spring is basically a second New Year. Use it to build momentum, not burnout. Your future beach-self will be glad you did.
