State Offering New Program for Offenders Seeking Employment

South Carolina – The South Carolina Department of Probation, Parole, and Pardon Services (SCDPPPS) has introduced a new initiative to aid offenders in their job search efforts. As part of this program, SCDPPPS has distributed 21 laptops to probation and parole county offices throughout the state. These laptops are equipped with wireless modems and various programs designed to assist offenders in creating résumés, cover letters, PowerPoint presentations, and other job-related tasks.

Offenders can also use these laptops to participate in mandatory virtual programs, such as Batterer’s Intervention, Substance Use Education, and Sex Offender Treatment. The laptops will be rotated among different county offices to maximize accessibility for offenders statewide. Usage will be closely monitored, and the laptops will not be loaned out on an individual basis.

SCDPPPS currently oversees an active offender population of 22,610, with approximately 26 percent of these individuals being unemployed. This new program aims to reduce that unemployment rate by providing offenders with essential tools and resources to secure employment.
