School District Five holds Groundbreaking Ceremony at Chapin Elementary

IRMO – Lexington-Richland School District Five held a Groundbreaking Ceremony for a new classroom wing addition at Chapin Elementary School on August 4.

The new wing is being added to help accommodate the new educational structure the district is implementing in 2026. The construction will replace 8 portables at the school and contain 12 classrooms, adding about 288 seats. This will allow the school to be able to increase their maximum capacity.

“Our theme this year is ‘Still growing, still going, still good’, and the addition of this new wing is the perfect reflection of our theme,” Chapin Elementary School Principal Amy Sgorrano said. “It not only expands our physical space, but it allows our students to have rooms inside the building and embodies our continued growth and unwavering momentum. It also reflects the deep commitment of our stakeholders to the success of every student who walks through our doors and the bright future we are shaping together.”

A project of the 2024 Bond Referendum, the new 16,000 sq. ft. classroom wing at the school will enhance school safety by bringing all students into the building in secure classrooms.

“This groundbreaking is what the voters believed in when voting for the 2024 Bond Referendum,” Superintendent Dr. Akil E. Ross, Sr. said. “These new classrooms are the progress that will come to this site. We thank our partners, we thank our Board, voters and we thank our families for choosing to be a part of School District Five and the great community of Chapin, South Carolina. I think it is important that we do the groundbreaking on a rainy day so that when we cut the ribbon, it will be a sunny day for students in our community.”
