CHAPIN, S.C. – Piney Woods Elementary School brought the community together for a unique conservation event, “Purple Martin Haze Craze,” on February 27, 2025. The event focused on raising awareness about the Purple Martin, a bird species that relies entirely on humans for survival along the East Coast.
Students, families, and community members gathered to enjoy interactive exhibits, popcorn, and a special documentary screening of Purple Haze, followed by a Q&A session with filmmaker Captain Zach Steinhauser.
One of the evening’s highlights was a bird call competition during intermission, where participants did their best to mimic the complex and beautiful Purple Martin song. Fifth grader Luke Iott took home the top prize for his impressive imitation.
