Lexington County Teacher Charged with Assaulting Students at Irmo Middle School

Lexington, SC — A teacher at Irmo Middle School, Jermaine Cornelius Singletary, has been charged with assaulting two students on separate occasions. Singletary, 51, faces two counts of third-degree assault, according to arrest warrants issued by the Lexington County Sheriff’s Department.

Sheriff Jay Koon confirmed that an investigation was launched after the school became aware of the incidents. According to authorities, Singletary is accused of assaulting one student in March and another in October.

In the March incident, Singletary allegedly struck a student after mistakenly believing the student had touched his head. The October incident involved Singletary reportedly striking a student who had retrieved a portion of an assignment he had thrown in the trash.

Both incidents were not reported to school administrators, as required by protocol, leading to further investigation by the sheriff’s department.

Singletary turned himself in to authorities on Wednesday morning and is currently being held in the Lexington County Detention Center. The charges of third-degree assault carry serious legal consequences, and the investigation is ongoing.
