Last Friday’s 3-2 loss to Lucy Beckham eliminated the Eagles from the Class 5A Division II playoffs. It also marked an end to the 67-year-old coaching legend’s tenure as he announced his retirement at the end of the season.

“It is time,” McLeod said in an interview. “My body is letting me know it is time. They say you are going to know when it is time, and it is.”

During McLeod’s tenure, he oversaw the program’s growth from Class 2A to Class 5A Division II. He led the Eagles to 557 victories, 12 region titles and four state championships (1996, 2001, 2002, 2018).

McLeod is a member of both the S.C. Baseball Coaches and Chapin Halls of Fame.

The 2025 season also ended for the Chapin softball team. They fell short 6-5 at home to North Myrtle Beach in a Class 5A District Three elimination game.

Williams is new AD

The Chapin athletics department has already acted on another retirement.

Billie Williams is replacing Ronnie Wessinger as school athletics director. A longtime competitive cheer coach with her mother Vicki, she’s played a role in the team winning 17 state championships. This includes this past season in Class 5A Division II.
