Golf tips for Seniors: Time to knock the rust off

By Robin All

The Master’s is here and signaling the start of golf season in South Carolina. Some of us have braved the inclement weather and gotten in a few rounds to knock the rust off after the winter holiday break. The phone has been ringing; golf practice and lessons are on our minds.

I encourage us all to start walking as well as stretching and swinging a club to help remember the proper golf fundamentals. The thing that leaves the quickest is the chipping and pitching. Inside of 60 yards accounts for more than half of our score but most of us spend more time hitting the long clubs. A good putting tip is to putt at a small coin on a smooth carpet indoors. Try to hit the coin and go no more than 18 inches past the imaginary hole. Obviously a putt short of the hole will not go in. “Never up, never in.” A lot can be gained while swinging a club in the yard without hitting a ball. The ball activates the mind to what you have done the most in the the past. While working on a change in some part of the swing, you can focus on that instead of the ball or results. Treat the cause of your faults instead of the symptoms of your golf disease.

Making an appointment for some tune up golf lessons with your PGA Professional can give you a specific plan for your practice. Good luck and continued good health this golfing season.
