Chapin’s passing attack helped new head coach Ryan Cole open his tenure with a victory.
Quarterback Brady Albro threw for 301 yards and five touchdowns and wide receivers Khalen Bostick and Stone Furrey each caught two scores in the 47-37 road victory over Catawba Ridge.
Running back Cole Martin had an all-around performance. He accounted for three touchdowns rushing, receiving, and passing and finished with 199 total yards.
After an errant snap out of the endzone resulted in a safety, Albro found Bostick in the endzone to put Chapin up 9-0 in the first quarter.
A turnover forced on the defense set up another scoring opportunity for the Eagles. This time, a halfback option pass was called for running back Cole Martin who hit Bostick for a 50-yard touchdown to extend the lead to 16-0 with 5:19 left in the first quarter.
The Cobras answered with a quarterback sneak by C.J. Couch and a 2-point conversion early in the second quarter. Four minutes later, Albro hit Gaffney transfer Stone Furrey for a 65-yard bomb to make it 23-8.
Couch threw an 8-yard touchdown for Catawba Ridge and a field goal by Chapin gave it a 26-15 halftime lead. The Eagles opened the second half with a 9-yard touchdown pass by Albro to Martin. An 80-yard touchdown pass by Couch brought the Cobras to within 33-23 after the 2-point conversion. Just 78 seconds later, Albro and Furrey connected again on a 35-yard touchdown to make it 40-23.
Martin closed out the scoring for Chapin with his third touchdown of the evening with 5:32 left in the game.
The Eagles will next play their home opener at refurbished Cecil Woolbright Field. Longtime rival A.C. Flora will visit coming off a 42-6 win over Westwood in which quarterback Roper Wentzky threw for 157 yards and four touchdowns and defensive back Azel Banag had a 99-yard interception return for a touchdown.
Chapin snapped a 4-game losing streak in the series last year with a 22-7 victory.
