Chapin looks to rebound versus Lexington

By Thomas Grant Jr.

With the student body in high spirits for “Homecoming”, the Chapin football team looked to close out the festivities with a win over defending Class 5A champion Dutch Fork.

Instead, the Eagles fell behind early in a 63-10 loss to the Silver Foxes. It was the 12th straight loss to their Lexington/Richland School District Five rival and second loss of the season.

Dutch Fork jumped out to a 35-0 lead in the first quarter. Chapin finally scored with 9:33 left in the second quarter on a touchdown run by Gavin Stam.

What was significant about the score was it ended the Silver Foes’ streak of scoreless quarters. They had gone 15 straight quarters without allowing a point and have given up a total of 17 points.

The Eagles (4-2, 0-1) now find themselves in an early ‘must-win’ game in Region 4-5A at Cecil Woolbright Field. They play host to Lexington (4-2, 0-1), which is coming off a 34-8 loss to Irmo.

The Wildcats have won five of the last six meetings with Chapin. This includes last year’s 22-14 victory in Lexington.

A victory keeps a team in position to remain in contention for a higher seed in either the Division I or II playoffs. Among the factors used to determine seeding are region finish and RPI Maxpreps.com rankings.

Chapin quarterback Brady Albro continues to lead the Palmetto State with 1,602 yards and 17 touchdowns. Freshman Tobin Sam and senior Khaled Bostick both lead the team in receptions (35) and receiving yards (619 yards) and touchdown receptions (nine).

S.C. High School League

Pushes Season Back a Week

As schools recover from the damage inflicted by Hurricane Helene, the South Carolina High School League has agreed to adjust the remaining schedule.

A 9-4 vote by the Executive Committee approved the decision to extend the regular season by one week. This means the playoffs will begin Nov. 15 and the state championship games will take place Dec. 12-14 at South Carolina State University.

In addition, the Touchstone Energy Bowl in Myrtle Beach will now take place the same day as the Shrine Bowl in Spartanburg on Dec. 21.
