Flag Day is a special day celebrated on June 14th in the United States. It commemorates the adoption of the flag of the United States on June 14th, 1777 by resolution of the Second Continental Congress.
If you fly an American Flag at your home, school or business, the flag will eventually become “unserviceable”. An American Flag is considered unserviceable when it is torn, frayed, soiled, faded or otherwise damaged.

American Flags, should be inspected to ensure that your flag is serviceable. When it becomes “unserviceable”, there are a variety of places where you can purchase a replacement American Flag. There are proper ways to dispose of an unserviceable American Flag, a quick “Google” search will provide the methodologies, however, as many American Flags are made from chemicals that can be toxic when burned.

Chapin American Legion Post 193 provides an easy way for you to ensure your American Flag is disposed of properly. We have a flag drop box adjacent to the front door of our Post Building 102 Lexington Avenue Chain, SC, just place any unserviceable American Flag in the drop box, and we will dispose of it properly.
About every other month, following our weekly Monday morning Veterans Breakfast, we bring all the flags into our building and properly fold them. The number of flags is generally in the “hundreds”. Each flag is respectfully and properly folded. These folded flags are packaged and then taken to Dunbar Funeral Home in Irmo. Dunbar, at no charge, utilizes their cremation facilities to properly dispose of the unserviceable American flags.
